Apple Pay, the company’s contactless payment solution for iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and the Apple Watch, will launch here in the UK this summer.
That’s according to ‘industry sources’, who have revealed all to the Telegraph. The service will purportedly be available on compatible iPhones on these shores ‘in around two months’.
Apple is expected to make the announcement official at its annual Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC), which starts with a keynote speech from CEO Tim Cook this evening.
The move would make the UK the first country outside of the US to get Apple Pay. It had been assumed that Canada was next on Apple’s list as it looked to grow in North America before going global.
Sources say that both Lloyds Bank and MasterCard will be on board from launch. The inclusion of the latter should mean many iPhone users will be able to tie their credit cards to their handset and pay for low ticket items using the device.
Santander is also said to be training staff in new contactless payment systems over the next few weeks.
Apple Pay has proved a modest success in the US, where contactless pay terminals are still relatively limited. However, the boom in contactless payments in the UK means it should go some way to being more popular in Blighty.
