Microsoft killed off a Nokia–manufactured smartwatch in the wake of its takeover of the Finnish phone giant, despite the device being shown to clients at Mobile World Congress last year.

Dubbed the Moonraker, the watch used the classic Windows Phone interface and apparently had the ability to read texts and power off when the user raised and dropped their arm.

However, Microsoft deemed the watch too similar to its Band and decided to can the project. The Redmond company is plotting a sequel to the latter, rumoured to be ready for release by the end of 2015.

The only reason the Microsoft Moonraker has seen the light of day now is thanks to anonymous tipsters and a Tumblr blog from a Microsoft designer called Pei-Chi Hseih.

The latter’s blog has been shut down, but images surfaced on Twitter thanks to renowned leaker @evleaks, whose pictures show a device which clearly had plenty of promise.

Word is the pics were not renders. But rather shots made for marketing purposes, showing just how close the Moonraker actually came to being released.
