Apple appears to be plotting a major upgrade to the front–facing FaceTime camera on the forthcoming iPhone 6S, following the discovery of files that hint at a series of top end specs buried deep within newly released iOS 9 code.
The code, unearthed by developer Hamza Sood, shows file extension names which mention ‘1080p supported’, ‘front flash supported’, ‘panorama supported’ and ‘slowmo supported’.
This suggests that Apple is readying a major overhaul of its front-facing shooter to bring it in line with rival offerings from the likes of Samsung and HTC.
At present, Apple’s FaceTime camera lags well behind the latest ‘selfie’ lenses on devices such as the HTC Desire Eye.
It comes after rumours pointed to Apple prepping a major revamp of the iPhone’s main camera with the iPhone 6S.
There has been talk of ‘DSLR quality’ images, although it’s not clear exactly what specs will allow Apple to reach such giddy heights.
The much rumoured iPhone 6S is expected to be released in early autumn, along with a larger model in the form of the iPhone 6S Plus.
iOS 9, which brings with it Apple's new streaming service and extends its mobile payments scheme to the UK, is available now to developers and goes into public beta in July.
